UPPER SCHOOL LITERATURE
Grade 7 / Ancient Literature
This course will expose the students to the best representative works of ancient western and near eastern prose, poetry, and drama. Through a synthesis of great literature, historical background, and Biblical principles, the students will expand their ability to critically analyze and interpret various literary works. As they develop fluency with the works, movements, genres, and terms of great literature, the students will examine how literary figures have used their talents, whether for the purpose of exalting their Creator or with the intention of ignoring and opposing Him. Students will learn to appreciate the creative achievements of people created in the image of God. In addition, the students will be challenged to use their own creative abilities to write in a manner that will model the structure of great literature.
Berean students will:
• Read and analyze a variety of Ancient literature.
• Understand the technical and aesthetic aspects of great literature.
• Think critically about the content, form, and interpretation of literary works.
• Develop a deeper understanding of truth as they learn to differentiate between vain philosophies and Scriptural principles in literature.
• Expand their ability to integrate deeper thought and learned vocabulary into their own verbal and written communication.
• Develop a higher view of God through an examination of beauty, form, and talent.
Grade 8 / Medieval Literature
This course will expose the students to the best representative works of medieval prose, poetry, and drama. Through a synthesis of great literature, historical background, and Biblical principles, the students will expand their ability to critically analyze and interpret various literary works. As they develop fluency with the works, movements, genres, and terms of great literature, the students will examine how literary figures have used their talents, whether for the purpose of exalting their Creator or with the intention of ignoring and opposing Him.
