THE BEREAN FACULTY


RICHARD CALI
teaches leadership (writing and public speaking) at Berean Academy. He has been an educator for fifteen years and has served in many capacities at Berean since August 1997. He began teaching at the grammar level, and then taught upper school literature, history, rhetoric, and Bible. He has also served in administration as Interim Headmaster and Assistant Headmaster and was privileged to give the school’s first two graduation commencement addresses. He represented Berean as a speaker at the 2004 ACCS annual conference in Atlanta. Rich is a graduate of the University of South Florida and is presently continuing his education through the Cambridge Study Center in Lakeland, Florida. Enjoying time with his wife, Debbie, and their eight children is his greatest blessing. In his free time, he loves to read and spend time with his family in the outdoors.



MEGAN CARTER
teaches third grade at Berean Academy. She received her B.A. in International Studies with a focus on Africa and the Middle East at the University of South Florida. Before coming to Berean she spent time in Egypt as a missionary with YWAM serving the poor and working with Sudanese refugees. She and her husband Joseph now live in Seminole Heights and attend Tampa Reformed Baptist Church where her father-in-law is the pastor. Megan loves spending time with her husband, reading, singing, traveling and mountain biking. Her desire in life is to please the Lord and to wash the feet of others as Christ did. Her favorite quote: "Only one life, ‘twill soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last." (Jim Elliot)



 


JAMA DALE
 teaches fourth grade at Berean Academy. She graduated with distinction from Indiana University earning a B.A. in Elementary Education. She is a mother of four and has eleven years experience teaching multiple grade levels while home schooling.  Eight of those years she utilized classical method. Jama also has taught and directed programs at her church. She and her husband have been foster parents to "the least of these". Since moving to Florida, the Dale family has become members of Tampa Bay Presbyterian Church. Jama enjoys reading, time with her family and scrap booking.



 


LAUREN FRITZ teaches Greek, Music Appreciation, and Upper School History at Berean. She recently graduated with honors from Covenant College where she received a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion. As a Member of the Residence Life staff, she served as both a Discipleship Coordinator and as a Resident Assistant. There is currently a residence hall named after her at Covenant. Lauren was a member of Berean's first graduating class and is excited to teach in the community in which she spent many years learning. She enjoys reading, building relationships, having deep philosophical discussions, singing, drinking tea and swing dancing.






ERIC VON FULLGRAF
teaches literature at Berean Academy. He received his B.A. in English Literature from the University of South Florida and his M.A. in Liberal Studies from USF’s interdisciplinary program. As a writer/illustrator, he has a special interest in the relationship between literature and the visual arts. He wrote his master’s thesis on the illuminated printing of William Blake. Eric has written for the Mars Hill Review. In 2001 he was a winning contestant on ABC television’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire?. He also teaches at Cambridge Study Center where his classes include Cambridge Preparatory, The Art of Leadership and Thoughts Captive. Eric serves as a ruling elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA). Eric, his wife Britney and son Simon, live in Lakeland, Florida.


 


JACKY HICKS teaches 2nd and 3rd grade at Berean South. Jacky graduated with highest honors from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Her B.A. was in political science and she earned minors in British & American literature and journalism.  This fall, she plans to begin an M.A. program in Composition & Rhetoric. Jacky and her husband are active members of Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church in South Tampa, where she has taught the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Sunday school class. They are also involved with Reformed University Fellowship on the USF campus. Jacky has tutored math at St. Petersburg College and assisted at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies' elementary and middle school Writers Camp. She also tutored 7th and 8th grade students at John Hopkins Middle School. Jacky is passionate about apologetics and Biblical worldview.  She enjoys reading, exercising, and cooking.



GLENN HOSHAUER
teaches Bible and History of Ideas at Berean Academy and serves as Upper School lead teacher. He has a B.A. in Religion from Grove City College, M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a J.D. from Regent University School of Law. While in seminary he taught 4-5th grade at a local Christian school. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of New England (PCA) and served as pulpit supply for 2 years in New Hampshire, where he preached and taught Christian education classes for children and adults. He also taught Christian worldview in the Regent undergraduate program. Glenn is from Philadelphia and continues to be an Eagles fan. He and his wife, Laurie, met in college and have 3 children. His interests include theology and history, as well as science fiction and fantasy.




LORY HUNDT
teaches science at Berean Academy. She holds a B.S. in Education and Science, an M.S. in Sports Medicine and is currently pursuing post-graduate studies at Notre Dame. In her 27 years of teaching science, Lory has written curriculum for the University of Florida "Agriculture in the Classroom" program and served as Science Dept. Head for five years in Citrus County. Lory also is a presenter at ACCS conferences. She works with the C.S. Lewis Society and is a member of the National Science Teachers Assoc. participating in seminars with scientists from around the world. She and her husband Jay have two daughters. Lory enjoys boating, snorkeling/scuba, spelunking, target shooting, spider-shining, gardening, acting, reading, worldview studies and attending lectures.

 



LOU KALOGER
teaches Worldview and the Arts and Literature and the Humanities at Berean Academy. He holds a B.F.A. in Painting from Bowling Green State University and an M.A. in Biblical Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary. He currently serves as associate pastor of Tampa Covenant Church.  In addition to his responsibilities at TCC, Lou teaches logic, sits on the board of directors for the Conservatory for the Arts at Tampa Bay, and teaches a course at Trinity College of Florida on the history of religious imagery. Lou and Angela have been married since 1978.  They have three daughters and a great son-in-law.






JANE LAMBERS
is Berean Academy’s Director of Library Services.  She was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and grew up in Sarasota, Florida. She has earned a B.A. in English from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and an M.A. in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida. Before joining the Berean staff in 2003, Jane taught English at two Tampa middle schools and served as Co-director of Children’s Ministries at her church. She and her husband Ben have four children at Berean.







AMY LUGO
 teaches kindergarten and first grade at Berean Academy's south Tampa campus.  She graduated from Clearwater Christian College with a B.A. in Humanities.  During her junior year, she  took her first job teaching middle school English and began researching classical Christian education. She was hired by Berean Academy in 2003. She enjoys reading (fiction and nonfiction alike), going to museums, writing, attending classical music concerts and traveling. Some of her goals are to earn a master's degree in English, publish some of her own works, and finish her “places-to-see” list.







DONNA LYNAM
teaches fourth and fifth grade and serves as lead teacher at Berean's south Tampa campus.  She is presently teaching Latin and history to grades 3 through 7. She has a B.A. in Biblical Education and an M.A. in Education Administration.  Donna directs the children's ministry at her church and teaches a women's city-wide Bible Study. At the top of her list of favorites are dinner with Bruce, her husband of 35 years, camping and watching the sunset at the beach with her husband and three children; Brian, Meredith and Bethany.  She loves reading at the park with Bethany, mission trips and meeting friends for coffee.  Donna says, "My delight as a teacher is watching students delight in discovery as they grow in their love of learning."





MARY LYNCH
 teaches Kindergarten at Berean Academy. She and her husband, John, have two daughters at Berean. Mary attended Florida State University, where she earned a B.S. in Child Development. She was a professional clown for 20 years in Miami, Washington, D.C. and finally in Tampa where she owned a local children's entertainment company, Clowning Around. Currently she clowns only as a ministry, though she occasionally clowns around in the Kindergarten classroom!








DANIEL MACEY joined the faculty of Berean Academy in the Fall of 2008 as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Science. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Math, Physics, and Chemistry at Florida Southern College and his Master of Science in Physics at the University of Central Florida. While at UCF he worked as a teaching assistant in an interactive physics classroom. This valuable experience culminated in the presentation of research results at a National Meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). Mr. Macey's professional experience also includes: Assistant Professor of Physics at Southeastern University and a faculty member of Cambridge Study Center and George Jenkins High School in Lakeland. He lives in Lakeland with his wife and son and their four dogs.






CAROLINE SCHWALM is a teacher's aide at Berean Academy's South campus. Caroline received her B.S. in Horticulture from the University of Georgia. She was the Christian Education Coordinator for the Army Chapel in Wildflecken, Germany while her husband was stationed there. She has fourteen years of teaching experience as a home educator to her two grown children. Caroline has continued her education through Cambridge Study Center as well as serving on the Board of Directors. Caroline and her husband Tony are members of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Riverview, Florida where they teach English as a second language.








MEAGAN SMITH
teaches second grade at Berean Academy. She received her B.S. in Elementary Education with honors from the University of South Florida. Meagan and her husband Neal are the proud parents of two daughters and one son, the eldest is a student here at Berean Academy. Previously she has tutored in math and reading in Hillsborough County. Besides spending time with her family outdoors, she enjoys traveling to the Caribbean, exercising and reading spiritually uplifting books. She believes reading is the mind's exercise and is as important as physical activity.

  

 

 



CONNIE TRIM co-teaches fifth and sixth grades at Berean Academy. Since receiving her bachelor’s degree in education from University of Central Florida, Connie has been teaching various English/Language Arts classes for 13 years in 5th through 12th grades. Originally from the Midwest, she and her family are transplants to Florida and are members of Seminole Presbyterian Church. Connie enjoys hiking to enjoy God’s creation, gardening to watch beauty and growth, and spending time with friends and family. She and her husband look forward to traveling one day.







TONY VALENTI
 teaches upper school Latin and Greek at Berean Academy. He has an A.A. in Business Administration from Polk Community College and a B.A. in Classics from the University of South Florida. He has done graduate work at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. Prior to teaching at Berean Academy, Tony spent eight and a half years opening restaurants for Crispers. He enjoys reading and playing soccer in his spare time. Tony and his wife Angela have a son. They live in Lakeland and attend Covenant Presbyterian Church. 







BONNIE VAN VOORST
teaches lower school art at the Main Campus. A Tampa native, she received her B.A. in Studio Art at the University of South Florida, focusing on drawing and painting. Bonnie plans to pursue an MFA in Graphic Design, but in the meantime she spends much of her free time designing posters and other graphic artwork. Before coming to Berean, she worked in marketing and promotions for musicians. She enjoys remodeling her grandparents' old house, where she lives with her musician-husband Rich.










JANNA VINCENT
is the grammar school aide and music teacher at Berean's south Tampa campus. She is a graduate of the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC with a B. A. in music education. Over the past twelve years, Janna has been involved in various music teaching positions from public school to church children's choirs of various ages, teaching piano and voice, as well as  serving as a guest clinician for a children's choir youth camp. She has participated in vocal music of every genre: church music, classical (Renaissance music is a favorite!), jazz, contemporary, and even barbershop. She and her husband, Dan, have three children who love music almost as much as their mother. Her favorite quote: "Music makes a difference!"






RACHEL WILSON
teaches first grade at Berean Academy. She graduated with honors from Seattle Pacific University with a B.A. in Sociology. She is continuing her education at Cambridge Study Center in Lakeland. Rachel has experience working with children and families in a variety of social work settings including family advocacy with Head Start and counseling adolescents in group homes. She and her husband have operated a home for unmarried pregnant women.  Rachel enjoys good music, thought provoking reading, cooking, yard-sales, running, and weight lifting. She is a member of Tampa Covenant Church. Rachel is the mother of three children, who attend Berean Academy.
 

 

 



CATHRYN WOOD
teaches grammar school physical education, pre – algebra and algebra one at Berean Academy. She received her B.S. in Physical Education with a specialization in Exercise Science from the University of South Florida. Before Berean, Cathryn worked part time as a nanny while finishing her bachelor’s degree. She enjoys coaching volleyball and playing sports such as softball, volleyball, basketball and football with her husband Buddy. Besides playing around, she does like to sit with a cup of coffee and read a good book occasionally. Together, Cathryn and Buddy, serve as youth pastors at Willow Bend Community Church in Land O’ Lakes.

 



It is in the educational field that the struggle for or against God is being decided today.
